Since 2015, Oregon Cartoon Institute has offered an annual one day crash course in Oregon film history. Designed as a place of cross fertilization and interdisciplinary discussion, the Oregon Film History Invitational changes its name in 2018 to the Oregon Film History Conference.
This year’s conference focuses on the minor cinemas of Oregon: newsreels, educational films, industrial films, promotional films, scientific films, television commercials, student films, experimental films, animation, home movies. It will culminate with a conversation with Will Vinton, who began in one of the minor cinemas, experimental animation, and became one of the most important figures in Oregon film history.
The conference is attended by educators, historians, curators, librarians, archivists, writers and filmmakers. Less formal than an academic conference, it is more specialized than an event open to the public. It provides an annual opportunity for professionals who share an interest in Oregon film history to step outside their specialty and interact.
The 2018 conference receives support from University of Oregon Libraries, Oregon Film (aka the Governor’s Office of Film and Television), Oregon Film Museum, and Dark Horse Comics/Dark Horse Entertainment.

Q: Who is the conference for?
A: The conference is attended by educators, historians, curators, librarians, archivists. It also attracts an elastic sixth category we call “other”, in which writers, artists, filmmakers, urban planners are found.

A: This year the conference steering committee included Anne Richardson, OCI; Elizabeth Peterson, UO Libraries; Libby Burke, BPA; Michele Kribs, OHS.

A: Participants must supply a qualifying affiliation with a school, museum, historical society, or other non profit organization whose work engages with Oregon film history in some way.

Q: How much does the conference cost?
A: Nothing. Seating, however, is limited. You must register in order to attend. No walk-ins.

A: No. One seat per registration.

A: No. We keep a waiting list in case of cancellations.
Q: How does the conference maintain balanced representation among this diverse set of professions?
A: We divide our limited seating evenly among the six groups: educators, historians, curators, librarians, archivists, “other”. Fifteen seats are available for each group. If a category has not been filled by April 13, names on the waiting lists of over-subscribed categories move into those available slots.
